Everything you need to know about the process, the medicine, the pricing, and what to expect — without the marketing language.
The process
Helix connects you with an AHPRA-registered Australian doctor for a telehealth consultation focused on testosterone health. The process is: complete a free symptom assessment online → get a blood test referral from your doctor → attend your local pathology collection centre (typically bulk billed through Medicare at no out-of-pocket cost) → have a 20-minute telehealth consultation to review your results → if clinically eligible, your doctor prescribes treatment and coordinates with the partner pharmacy for delivery. The whole process typically takes 3–6 weeks from assessment to first fill.
No. You can come directly to Helix without a GP referral. Our doctors can assess and prescribe independently, provided your blood results and clinical picture meet the criteria for treatment. If we refer you on to a specialist, that's the doctor's decision based on your results.
After your assessment, a Helix doctor will review your responses. If blood testing is the appropriate next step, they'll send you a pathology referral by email. You take it to any Sonic Healthcare or Australian Clinical Labs collection centre — no appointment needed. Blood tests are typically bulk billed through Medicare, meaning no out-of-pocket cost in most cases. Once results are in, your doctor will schedule a telehealth consultation to discuss them.
From completing your assessment to your first pharmacy fill, most patients take 3–6 weeks. This includes a few days for blood results to come back (typically 2–3 business days), the doctor review, and pharmacy dispatch. If your results come back quickly and you're eligible, it can be faster.
Yes. The symptom assessment costs nothing and involves no commitment. The $300 fee applies only to the telehealth consultation with your doctor — which happens after your blood results are in and you've decided you want to proceed to that step.
Medical & clinical
Yes. Testosterone is a Schedule 4 (S4) prescription medication in Australia, legally available when prescribed by a registered doctor for clinically confirmed hypogonadism. All Helix prescriptions follow TGA regulations and AHPRA guidelines. You cannot legally obtain testosterone without a valid prescription, and we would never help you try to.
We order a comprehensive hormone panel that goes well beyond just total testosterone. Our standard panel includes: total testosterone, free testosterone, LH (luteinising hormone), FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin), oestradiol (E2), PSA (prostate-specific antigen), and haematocrit. This gives your doctor a complete picture. See our blood testing guide for full details.
Yes, in most cases. Blood tests ordered by an Australian-registered doctor are typically bulk billed at major pathology providers including Sonic Healthcare and Australian Clinical Labs — meaning no out-of-pocket cost to you. Your Medicare card is all you need. Check with Medicare for your specific entitlements.
Your doctor will explain your results clearly and outline what your actual options are — whether that's a referral to an endocrinologist, a lifestyle-focused plan, a follow-up test at a later date, or an alternative treatment approach. You'll always leave with a clear next step.
Blood testing is not optional at Helix. It is the medical foundation of proper testosterone assessment. Without confirmed bloodwork, prescribing testosterone would be irresponsible. If you're not willing to do a blood test, we're not the right service for you — and we'd encourage you to ask yourself why.
TRT is well-tolerated by most men when properly prescribed and monitored. Potential side effects include increased red blood cell count (managed via regular blood monitoring), temporary acne in some patients, and suppression of natural testosterone and sperm production. Your doctor will discuss all of this with you before prescribing. Ongoing quarterly blood monitoring is included in your plan for this reason.
TRT can significantly reduce sperm production. If you are planning to father children in the near future, this is a critical conversation to have with your doctor before starting. Alternatives such as clomiphene citrate can help raise testosterone while preserving fertility. Your doctor will discuss this with you directly.
Yes. There are no lock-in contracts. You can cancel your subscription at any time from your patient portal. If you stop TRT, your natural testosterone production will typically recover over time — though the timeline varies depending on how long you've been on treatment. Your doctor will guide you through a responsible cessation process if needed.
Consultations & doctors
All Helix doctors are independently practising, AHPRA-registered Australian medical practitioners with experience in men's hormonal health and telehealth. They operate under their own registration and clinical judgment. See our doctors page for more information about our medical team's approach and qualifications.
Your consultation is a 20-minute video or phone call with your Helix doctor. You'll discuss your blood results, your symptoms, your medical history, and any concerns you have. If you're a suitable candidate for TRT, your doctor will explain the recommended protocol and answer your questions. If you're not suitable, they'll explain why and outline your alternatives. There's no script — it's a real medical conversation.
No. Everything happens online, except the blood draw itself — which takes place at your local Sonic Healthcare or Australian Clinical Labs collection centre (no appointment needed, walk in). Consultations are via video or phone. Medication is delivered to your door. No waiting rooms.
Then they recommend against it, and they tell you why. Helix doctors are not incentivised by prescription volume — they're paid on a fee-for-service basis. If TRT isn't right for you, it's in everyone's interest — including ours — to say so clearly and direct you toward what is.
Pricing & billing
The assessment is free. The initial consultation is $300 — a one-time fee covering your doctor-led clinical assessment, blood test referral, and a clear clinical recommendation. If treatment is clinically appropriate and you choose to proceed, Helix Care is $119/month. Medication, injection supplies, and shipping are billed monthly by our partner pharmacy — estimated $80–$130/month. Blood tests may be required and are separate.
The $300 consultation covers a 20-minute telehealth appointment with an AHPRA-registered Australian doctor, a full review of your blood results and medical history, a pathology referral for your blood test, and a clear clinical recommendation — eligible or not, with a defined next step either way. It's a real medical consultation, not an automated questionnaire. The $300 is a one-time consultation fee and is not credited toward any future charges.
Helix Care at $119/month covers: ongoing doctor-led treatment management and oversight, prescription coordination and renewals, access to your patient portal to track results and status, ongoing monitoring and follow-up, and priority patient support. It does not include medication, injection supplies, or shipping — these are billed separately by your partner pharmacy.
No. The $119/month Helix Care subscription covers your ongoing doctor management and service — not the medication itself. Testosterone, injection supplies, and shipping are billed monthly by our partner pharmacy — estimated $80–$130/month.
Medication is dispensed by a registered Australian compounding pharmacy and billed monthly, separate from your Helix Care subscription. Estimated cost is $80–$130/month, confirmed before any charge is made.
Injection supplies (needles, syringes, alcohol swabs, and a sharps disposal container) and shipping are arranged by the partner pharmacy and billed as part of the pharmacy prescription fill — not included in the $119/month Helix Care fee. The pharmacy will provide full details of what is included in each fill.
Blood tests are not included in the $300 consultation fee or the $119/month Helix Care subscription. Your doctor will issue a pathology referral, and in most cases blood tests can be bulk-billed through Medicare at major pathology providers — meaning no out-of-pocket cost to you. Ongoing monitoring bloods may be required periodically and are handled the same way. Check with Medicare for your specific entitlements.
Yes, at any time. There are no lock-in contracts and no cancellation fees. You can manage your subscription from your patient portal. If you cancel, you can restart at any time — though a new clinical review may be required depending on how long you have been off treatment.
Telehealth consultations with Australian-registered doctors may attract a Medicare rebate under current government telehealth policy. Check with Medicare or your private health insurer for your specific entitlements.
Medication & delivery
Most patients are prescribed testosterone cypionate or testosterone enanthate, administered by intramuscular injection. Your medication is dispensed by the partner pharmacy and typically includes injection supplies (needles, syringes, swabs, and a sharps container) as part of the pharmacy fill — billed separately from your Helix Care subscription. Your first fill includes detailed administration instructions. Injection protocols are straightforward — the vast majority of patients self-administer without issue. Your doctor will confirm the right protocol for you.
Medication is dispensed by a registered Australian compounding pharmacy and billed directly by them when your prescription is filled — separately from your Helix Care subscription. Delivery is in plain, discreet packaging with nothing on the outside to indicate its contents. Delivery typically takes 3–5 business days after your prescription is processed by the pharmacy.
Testosterone solutions should be stored at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat. Specific storage instructions are included with every delivery. If you have questions about storage, message your doctor through the patient portal.
Contact your doctor through the patient portal as soon as possible. For serious reactions or anything that feels urgent, seek medical attention immediately. Helix is not an emergency service — call 000 if you are experiencing a medical emergency.
