🔬 How to complete your blood test
⏰ Morning timing (7–9am)
Testosterone peaks in the morning. Always book before 9am for accurate results.
🚫 Fast 8–12 hours first
No food, coffee or exercise. Water is fine. Fasting improves multiple marker accuracy.
📋 What to bring
Your pathology referral (emailed by your doctor) and Medicare card. Walk in — no appointment needed.
📍 Where to go
Any Sonic Healthcare or Australian Clinical Labs. Results in 2–3 business days.
⚠️ If currently on testosterone
Do not inject for at least 48 hours before your blood draw. Tell the collection centre you are on hormone therapy.

TRT Administration Guide
Doctor-reviewed guidance for your testosterone replacement therapy.

What is TRT?
Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is a medically prescribed treatment for hypogonadism — a condition where the body does not produce sufficient testosterone. TRT restores testosterone to normal physiological levels, which can significantly improve energy, mood, libido, body composition, and cognitive function in eligible patients.
Your prescription
You have been prescribed an injectable testosterone ester (enanthate or cypionate). These are long-acting formulations administered by intramuscular injection, typically once every 7–14 days depending on your protocol. Your doctor specifies your exact dose and frequency.
📦 What's in your delivery
💉 Testosterone vial
Enanthate or cypionate in oil at your prescribed concentration
Drawing needles (18g)
Wider gauge for drawing oil from the vial
Injection needles (23–25g)
Thinner gauge for the actual injection — reduces discomfort
🧪 Syringes, swabs & sharps container
Sterile syringes, alcohol swabs, and a sharps disposal container
💉 How to self-inject — step by step
Before you begin
Only inject in a clean, well-lit area. Never inject if feeling unwell or shaking. Your first injection should ideally be supervised by a healthcare professional.
Preparation
1
Wash your hands
Wash thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Dry with a clean towel. This is the most important step for preventing infection.
2
Gather your supplies
Place on a clean flat surface: testosterone vial, drawing needle, injection needle, syringe, two alcohol swabs, and your sharps container. Check the vial is within expiry and the solution is clear (slight golden colour is normal). Never use cloudy or particulate solution.
3
Warm the vial (recommended)
Roll the vial between your palms for 30 seconds or place in warm (not hot) water for 2–3 minutes. This reduces viscosity and makes the injection more comfortable.
Drawing the medication
4
Attach the drawing needle (18g)
Attach the larger drawing needle to the syringe. This wider gauge allows oil to flow easily. Remove the cap and keep the needle sterile — do not touch the tip.
5
Clean the vial top
Wipe the rubber stopper firmly with a fresh alcohol swab. Allow to air dry for 5–10 seconds. Do not blow on it.
6
Draw air, then medication
Pull the plunger back to draw air equal to your dose. Insert needle into the upside-down vial, push the air in, then pull back the plunger to draw your dose. Tap out any air bubbles and push them out carefully.
7
Switch to injection needle (23–25g)
Remove the drawing needle and replace with the thinner injection needle. Place the used drawing needle directly in the sharps container — do not recap it.
Injecting
Injection sites
Outer thigh (vastus lateralis): Middle third of the outer thigh. Sit, relax the muscle completely, inject into the outer side.
Hip (ventrogluteal): Above and behind the hip bone. Alternate sites each injection to allow recovery.

8
Clean the injection site
Wipe the area with an alcohol swab in a circular motion. Allow to air dry completely — at least 10 seconds.
9
Insert the needle
Hold the syringe like a dart. Relax the muscle. Insert firmly at a 90-degree angle in one smooth, confident motion. Hesitating makes it more painful.
10
Inject slowly
Inject the medication slowly over 10–15 seconds. Injecting too fast causes discomfort. Aspirating (pulling back slightly to check for blood) is optional but recommended for beginners.
11
Remove and apply pressure
Remove the needle smoothly. Apply gentle pressure with a clean swab for 30–60 seconds. Do not rub. A small lump at the site is normal — the oil absorbs over 24–48 hours.
12
Dispose safely
Place the used needle and syringe in your sharps container immediately. Never recap needles. Never put sharps in household rubbish. Return full sharps containers to your pharmacy or council collection service.
📈 What to expect from TRT
Weeks 1–4
Many patients notice improved energy and sleep within the first 2–4 weeks. Libido may begin to improve. Some experience temporary acne as testosterone levels rise — this usually settles.
Weeks 4–12
Mood improvements and mental clarity become more noticeable. Physical performance and body composition begin to change. Sexual function continues to improve.
3–6 months
Significant body composition changes become apparent. Most patients are well-established on their protocol by this point. Results vary significantly by individual.
⚠️ Side effects & safety
Common and manageable
Injection site soreness: Normal for 1–3 days. Rotate sites.
Acne: May increase initially, usually settles after a few months.
Mood fluctuations: Around injection timing. Manageable with protocol adjustments.
Oily skin: Temporary, settles as your body adjusts.

Seek emergency care immediately for
Chest pain • Shortness of breath • Sudden severe headache • Vision changes • Signs of stroke. Call 000. Your quarterly blood monitoring tracks haematocrit — a key safety marker on TRT.
📦 Storage & handling
Temperature: Room temperature (15–25°C). Do not refrigerate — cold oil is very viscous.
Light: Away from direct sunlight. Store in original packaging.
Expiry: Check before every injection. Never use expired medication.
Inspection: Clear to slightly golden, no particles. Discard and contact us if cloudy or discoloured.

🔬 Quarterly monitoring
Your Helix doctor monitors your hormone levels and key health markers every quarter. This is a clinical requirement for safe TRT and for prescription renewal.
✓ Total and free testosterone — confirm optimal range
✓ Haematocrit / haemoglobin — key safety marker on TRT
✓ PSA — prostate specific antigen
✓ Oestradiol — monitor for excess aromatisation
✓ LH / FSH — as clinically indicated
Do not skip your monitoring
Prescriptions cannot be renewed without current results. Your doctor will send a new blood referral when your quarterly review is due. You will receive a notification in this portal and by email.
